I had almost fogotten about Barnyard's Ed Carpenter Award (first bestowed on Ed Carpenter) from back in July.
And then relatively new to us blog Pacifist Viking alerted us that the Internets Tubes were abuzz with ESPN flunkie Mike Greenberg taking the somewhat implicit chauvinsm of "manning up" and making it a good deal more explicit with the use of the phrase "womanned down".
We have two problems with this new phrase.
1. It is stupid. Bad grammar, there's no good way to spell it, and man, it just sounds dumb.
2. Mike Greenberg could get beaten up by any one of literally thousands of 13 year old girls. If anyone should be tying femininity to lack of bravery or fortitude, Mike Greenberg is not that cat. (And, really no one should, unless it is done as a post on a carefully post-post-modern, ironic meta-sports sportsblog)
Of course, as the Pacifist Viking points out, this kind of language isn't new. No one called for Bill Parcells to attend sensitivity training when he kept calling Terry Glenn "she".
But that's a bigger question issue, and for right now, the main purpose of this post is to nominate Mike Greenberg for an Ed Carpenter Award! Can I get a second?
just for the fun of it, here's the column where Mike Greenberg "admitted" publicly that he's a Metrosexual! Ha-ha! Mike, Metrosexuals were pretty men. You ain't that, son! David Beckham is a metrosexual. You are a nerdy little man who thinks he looks pretty good on TV. You look better on radio, dig?
Women I'd rather have my back in a bar fight before Mike Greenberg include, but are not limited to the following: Mary Decker, Jackie Joyner Kersee, any Duke Cheerleader, Zola Budd, Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, Mia Hamm, Brandi Chastain, commenter Deformity Betty, every woman who played varsity soccer at my Division III school, with a special nod to Jenny Haire and the Epperson sisters. That's just the tip of the iceberg.
