Athletic Jew Sighting!

In the generally overlooked Austrlian Open, Serena Williams is crafting herself a nice comeback story, having risen 50 spots in the world rankings through the course of the tournament. Tonight, she came back from two match points to defeat Israeli teenager Shahar Peer. Peer was the first Israeli woman to reach the final 8 of a Grand Slam tournament. She was one point away from being the first Israeli man or woman in the semifinals of a slam.

So congratulations to Shahar Peer--she is only nineteen years old, and while it does feel at times that the retirement age of women's tennis players is approaching 22 or so, she apparently has the stuff to be around for awhile.
