2010 World Cup Pots Are Out

The pots that will determine the 8 groups of 4 for the 2010 World Cup have been determined:

Pot 1 (seeds):
South Africa (A1)
Germany
Brazil
Italy
Spain
England
Argentina
Netherlands

Pot 2 (Asia, Oceania and CONCACAF):
Japan
South Korea
North Korea
Australia
New Zealand
USA
Mexico
Honduras

Pot 3 (Africa and South America):
Ivory Coast
Ghana
Cameroon
Nigeria
Algeria
Paraguay
Chile
Uruguay

Pot 4 (Europe):
France
Portugal
Slovenia
Switzerland
Greece
Serbia
Denmark
Slovakia

We do plan on breaking down the groups as they are announced on Friday, but for now, let's just put together a best case and worst case scenario, just so you can see how much can be determined by the luck of the draw. Remember now, rules state that you can't have two teams from the same confederation, except Europe--you can have 2 European teams in the same draw.

Best Case Scenario might look like this:
South Africa
USA
Uruguay
Slovakia

That's a group that I would expect the US to get at least 2nd place in, and maybe win.

Worst Case:
Brazil
USA
Ghana
France

That would be another potential last place in the Cup kind of group. We'll see where we end up on Friday.
